And for now, knock on some wood - I WON. I took advantage of the sunny weather and got back on the roof. Much nicer in the light of day. Thanks to the warm weather the ice was loose from the roof and so I peeled it up and tossed it to the ground. Tomorrow I will wiggle back into the attic to see how things are holding up.
I thought I should report that I did not break my neck. And I did not make a hole in my roof.
I am thinking thinking I need to take a trip to good old Home Depot and see about some of those heating coil things.
