Gender Roles

Not a lot has REALLY changed since Medieval times. I know we all like to PRETEND that it is RADICALLY different and enlightened. But, one day at the Faire and watching Chase and Ellis and her boy cousins, made me think that, eh hem, it is not SO different after all. Or at least, secretly, girls and boys don't want it to be.

Girls will be girls
Give a girl a beautiful dress and perhaps some fairy wings and she is in her element [This of course excludes Pantyhose Girl, but she did go with the corset--so some femininity there]. This seems to go for girls from 1-100. [I personally had issue with some of the elderly fairies, but hey, whatever floats their boats. The following fairy looked very pretty.]

My girls are certainly no exception. They were beyond thrilled to get to wear princess dresses to a public place, see grown ladies dressed as fairies, and were beyond ticked at me for not dressing up for the occasion.

She looks a little hesitant. But hey, I would be too at that END of the chicken!

Boys will be boys
My nephews were enthralled with Combat Chess. Nate had to go cheer for the villains, and Pierce was happy to cheer King Arthur to victory. I think they were hoping for a bloodier finish than the Duke getting a spanking!

And then they got to throw weapons! Pierce tossed stars and Nate threw axes! Now how fun is that?

And Sir Ian came out and challenged a Knight. I think his exact words were "You can't get me mister Knight!" and then he asked "You won't make me dead, will you?" When the knight said "No", Ian went back to his taunting!
